Fandom: Gintama
History link: http://gintama.wikia.com/wiki/Sakata_Gintoki
Age: Mid-20s (yeah, Sorachi is unhelpfully vague on this point)
Canon point: End of season 5 (at the ep 252 hiatus)
Personality: What Gintoki would like you to believe is that he’s a brilliant, hard-working samurai who is just constantly down on his luck for reasons entirely beyond his control. What most people actually think he is is a useless, lazy moocher who lives off of sugar and copies of Shounen Jump. The actual reality is that both are true, to an extent. Most of the time, he is a lazy moocher who does as much as possible to not get involved in situations - but for Gintoki, this apathy is a defense mechanism. When push comes to shove, Gintoki is intelligent, a skilled fighter, muleishly tenacious, and loyal to a fault. He protects those he cares about, and won’t back away from promises he’s made (for example, he almost gets himself killed - more than once - in the Four Devas arc, in the name of protecting Otose, and holding up the promise he made to her husband’s spirit).
However, having been a soldier during the Amanto war, he’ s seen what caring too much will do to people. The war, for him, was only loosely about ideals - it was more about protecting his friends, and avenging the murder of Shoyu-sensei, who seems to have been the closest thing he had to a parent-figure. And in the aftermath of their defeat, he can see how it affected his friends - Takasugi, who cared so much he could never let go of the war, Sakamoto, who chose to abandon Earth and his ties there almost entirely, Katsura, who tries to balance his ideals with reality - and then Gintoki, who ultimately chooses to try not to care too much, to build up a wall of apathy between him and other people, which only somewhat works, as shown by all the times Gintoki gets himself wrecked in the name of helping other people.
When he’s not hiding under a copy of Jump or doing recklessly brave things that will likely end in suffering for both sides of the fight, Gintoki is blunt, self-conciously self-centered, and full of crude humor. He is not one to hold back his opinions, and unless the subject is squishy feelings, is usually perfectly content to speak his mind, loudly, and to the detriment of those who actually have to hear him. He can behave rather childishly when not in a life or death situation, and often tries to shirk responsibilites (which usually leaves Shinpachi to be the one to take care of actual household duties, despite being the only member of the Yorozuya who doesn’t live in the apartment). He also has a serious sweet tooth, and if left to his own devices would live on cake and parfaits forever, preferably in strawberry flavor.
Powers/Abilities: his charming personality and winning looks I MEAN. Gin’s main skills are firmly in the realm of the samurai, despite being (most likely) of peasant heritage. He’s an incredibly skilled swordsman, and was famed during the Amanto war for his talent in battle, being called ‘Shiroyasha’ (White Demon) for his ruthlessness and talent. He is also a Shounen Hero, which means despite being theoretically vanilla human, he is very good at surviving blows that should have killed him, having the stubbornness of an ill-tempered mule, and being able to explode things with a wooden bokken.
